Transmission linkage
How hard is it to pull and what is involved with getting it out? I am debating on taking it in or doing it myself... if its gonna be a pain without a lift and extra people/ easily ordered parts im just gonna take it in.. but if its reasonably easy ill do it myself input please
thanks for reply... I am having extreme difficulty getting into 1st and 2nd gear. I have a shortshifter which i have realigned a few times now with no results. The car being on/moving/off makes no difference in shifter feel. I beleive there is a problem with the shift linkage on the tranny side... I read in my A4 Bentley manual (dont have one for the S4 yet) that for the 5spd you need to take off the exhaust so you can drop the shifter cover to get access to the shift linkage. Any other ideas on what this could be and how long it would take/ how much it would cost to get done would help. I really am hoping its exterior to the transmission... but if not i guess it would be a good oppurtunity to flush fluid and replace seals. [&o]
You think that sounds like a synchro? it does it when the car is off or not moving... wouldn't a synchro only affect the car when you are driving and putting the car into another gear with the engine at different rpm then axles or something? I mean realllllly old cars didn't have synchros and they could get into gear.. you just had to double clutch
It does sound like the whole synchronizer issue that these things are kind of known for. You see what happens is where the collar (part of the synchronizer assemble which is locked to transmission shaft, all the gears are in constant mesh on bearings and when you slide the collar over the gear when you shift it then locks gear and shaft togethor) goes over the teeth on the gear (known as dog teeth) it can't because the these two parts were made with too tight of tolerances and over time of them touching and rubbing against eachother from shifting they make edges that make them impossible to lock togethor. Supposedly only 1 and 2 gears do this. And I guess taking tranny apart and filing these edges down fixes problem. Assuming that is what this is.

So could I just drive it a lot and wear down these edges? Somebody on AZ said that you can do this... i took the car in and they said that it is in fact something internal (like trhe synchronizer) that is messed up
I wouldn't think that the edges would wear to a better point just get worse and if you were to do that the extra load on the blocker rings will cause them to prematurely wear and you will then have the grinding gear action. So you may be screwed either way. I am not saying this is what is happening in your transmission but it is what it sounds like.
Thanks for all the info guys... things aren't looking too good for it right now but maybe something will come up before I have to have the tranny rebuilt.
Wow i had the exact same problem...still do acutaly..i had to take my short shifter out and put the stock shitfer back in. check out your front engine mount..my was very loose and i tightened it, put the stock shifter back it, and it feels alot better..not as hard to get into first and second..when u shift hard into first and second does it make a loud grinding noise? bc thats what mines doing now. I have an after market warranty but I havnt had time to get it fixed.
