Default Turbo lady :(

Hey everybody,... I’ve been lurking around for some time now, trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible... I’ve been a DSM'er for quite a while and just finally upgraded to an S4 recently....

Well I bought an 01 1/2 modded w/ trany issues.... pulled the trany replaced the slide gear for 3/4 and clutch, gutted the pre-cats and replaced the TBB.......... the car has an APR chip and forge diverter valves, and a OCT boost gauge........... Well shortly after the TBB I noticed a slight whine..., which I was hoping was the lack of pre-cats... Well last night the whine turned into a horrible whale.... yeah.... no boost leak (checked )

The car builds very little boost, and is very very loud!

so, I’m looking for a ko4 setup....

of course, the way these things always work.... it happened at the worst possible time... i just blew all the money i had saved on something else.... and I’m not quite sure what to do....

I found a couple sets of "good" used Ko3's, for pretty decent prices.... but i really don't want to do this twice...... suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
Earle

Well, the K04's are the way to go if you want something reasonably fast that is still pretty reliable. I'm actually in the same boat, but on a set of K04's. Good luck.

Take it out of chip mode and put into stock, the turbo's will last longer that way, yes it will be "slow".

New K03's are just a little less then straight K04's. You can use K04 with your chip & fueling.

Your looking around $2700 for the turbo's & install kit.

The motor needs to be pulled to do this, that's the hard part.

If you can DIY and have some knowledgeable friends, fellow DSM'ers or Audi friends will do, then go for it. Check on audiworld.com to see if there is a group buy for K04's in progress. Do not waste you time on K03's or Hybrids...trust me on this! The whole swap can be done in 20-30 hours with help. Make sure they have either done turbo swaps on their DSM's or Audi's. Research the FAQ on audiworld.com, there's alot of info. You'll need an engine hoist, and you'll need to build a cradle-caster roller to hold the car up as you drop the front subframe,( see me) it then allows you to roll the car back away from the engine/ tranny. Unless you have a lift!? This is a meticulous job...are you organized and dedicated?? Bag all parts and label as you go and take pics. And "PRE-OIL" those new turbos!!
This is "FAR advanced" to a DSM turbo swap. Apples and oranges man! You can feel free to ask me questions if you decide to partake in this adventure. We have done this twice! Best of luck! [sm=smiley20.gif]

By the way, I am also a fellow DSM'er we have a 93 GSX and 95 GST all with lotsa goodies!

Thanks for the advice Jen!
I'm a pretty skilled mechanic (was a race mechanic for Skip Barber Racing School for several years.... still work there just a desk jockey now ) , I'm not too worried about it, just annoyed...

I hadn't thought about using a car dolly to move the car... can i just pull the motor out the front with the hoist? i've got a large garage plenty of room to pull forward and out... no lift though .... i have had the trany out of this car already... it seemed like there was enough room to get the turbos out with it (the trany) out ot the way, is it possible to get them out by just removing the trany???

Sorry lukerpica, i'm not the guy w/ the evo,... i've got a 99 gst that i did an awd swap to, i also did a 6bolt swap (je 9.0, shot peened and balanced rotating assembly, head work, br20g, and lot's of other goodies) but i do have you on my aim though, fellow ccdsm'er?....

My mitsu is down at the moment because I sheared the mounts on the rear diff housing launching the car with the stutter box.... who knew axles would be such a pain to find!! i've got a set coming for TDS,... Frank over there is a really nice guy.

any tips and tricks you guys can give me would help! i'd like to get it done ASAP, i'm starting to pull it apart tomorrow.

Leave the tranny on the car.. Support the subframe with 3 small jacks. The is just for added saftey and meneuverability.

Once the subframe is disconnected (and supported by jacks ) and the rear driveline is disconnected. you'll lower the motor slightly / raise the car a little with the Dolly/ Casters and literaly push the car with 1 FINGER away from the motor Leaving everything out front giving easy access.

You did an AWD conversion on a GST!!!?? Hell yeah! Thats impressive and very rare. Must have had alot of time on you hands.. I would have just sold the GST and bought a GSX! My husband wants to see pictures! or a Link to the car / Thread in whatever forum your active in/if you are. WHat times have you run with it. My hubbys GST runs 8.4@88 1/8 12.6@113 1/4!
