Default Turbos - rebuild or new?

So, I've posted a few messages up here recently about some of the turbo troubleI was having and now I'm faced with the choice, doI rebuild my stock turbos, put in new stocks or upgrade?

The choice under most conditions would be simple...ifI have the car apart anyway, upgrade to the K04's. However, I've been told by a few places now that all Borg-Warner turbos are on backorder for potentially 14-16 weeks! That's a lot of time to be without my S4.

Just wanted a few opinions if anyone has heard the same noise about backordered turbos and if it's a bad idea to just have my current turbos rebuilt. thanks for any input.

Places have K04's in stock. Really it's $1500 more for the K04's over new K03's. So if you going to pay the labor to pull the engine, I would just go deeper in debt & get the K04's.

I would not pay any amount of $$ to put in rebuilt K03's in the car. It just not worth it.

you could also look into hybrid turbos. It's a little cheaper.

1500? I can order a K04 today for under 1000. Closer to 800 as a matter of fact but that doesn't include tax yet still under the 1500 listed above. I assume you're apart of this forum because you like your Audi and like performance. Why purchase another K03 or even fix it? This is your excuse to purchase the K04 or go big turbo.

The $1500 is the cost over K03's, you still need the hardware kit & inlet pipes for the K04's.

I would LOVE, met me rephrase that, REALLY LOVE, to get 2 RS4/K04's NEW for $800 & who the Hell cares what tax in on it So where is this super deal that you know about? It better not be some friend of friend, super hook up that you can't get them for anyone else!

2k,

he is a A4 guy. A A4 turbo ko4 sure you can get them for even cheaper than 800$. But there is no way you are going to get 2 RS4 turbos for 800$ they cost more than that to make pack and ship them to the USA.

the best I have seen is 900 EACH

I would never replace the already prone to fail ko3 back on my car unless I was selling it (I don't have a 2.7T it is just an example)
The hybrid ko3's are IMHO not a great Idea either. Most ko3's I have seen either blown or just replacedhave a slight crack in the exhaust housing. A hybrid is just a jazzed up ko3. I am not saying that it doesn't work but why try and push more power out of a casting and platform that is already prone to fail. Just seems silly to me

Well, it's been decided. i'll get the K04's...have you guys heard of anything about a software upgrade that will be needed when swapping the K03's for the K04's? Also, what about clutch durability once the K04's are in there?

The K04's won't effect the clutch. If you do additional mods to increase the HP then the clutch may be an issue but not if you just go to K04's.
