Hi all

Newbie here.

I've had both a B5 and B6 and they are totally different beasts. I had the B5 in my 20's. It was perfect even though I kept it stock. When the mileage got too high (75k), I traded up to a B6 S4 Cabrio. Now that I am in my 30's, again it is a perfect match...although an RS4 Cabrio is really what I want. If I was in my 20's, had the cash and time to do a project B5, I would do it.Now that I have money and time, I want reliability...not to mention I like the mild-exclusivity of the S4 Cabrio.

My 2 cents, I own a 2005 V8. Turbos are cool, but very expensive to maintain, and are harder on the rest of the components of the engine due to excessive heat, pressure, etc. The bigger engine is less complicated, and doesn't have to work as hard, plus it just sounds mean with the rumble! If all out quarter mile is your thing, then turbo would be the choice. The V8 is almost idling to do most tasks, there is just so much torque, so I feel it would last longer.

Yess4 did you test drive the 335xi? I test drove the B7 s4 and 335xi back to back. I agree that there is nothing like an S4, 340hp, exaust note, pure audi goodness. Beautiful car. I was shocked at how much smoother the ride in the bimmer was though. (test drove outside of Boston) I am on the fence about which one to get. However, for 10 large less, better gas milage and similar performance, the bimmer has alot going for it IMO.
No, I didn't actually drive it. After dumping $20K into my car recently I'd like to stay blissfully ignorant of other cars

I do love the exterior look of the bimmer, especially the convertible. I've heard great things about it as well. I wonder if the same debate exists with BMWs? That is, the 2008 M3 with a v8 versus models with a turbo.

BTW someone mentioned the supercharger costing more than the car. There's one coming out next year for $12K. About 20 hours of labor though, so still quite costly, but not as bad as the $25K one that's out there now.

yesss4 I think all of our points are valid. Most are not racing these cars but just driving them around. All the S4s are fun and fast and each have their own charm. There is certainly alot to be said for the B6/7 models...and perhaps if I had an oppurtunity to do a straight up trade for my B5 I would...then again...

As for BMW - obviously the 335 and the M3 (old and new) are totally awesome and fun to drive cars. I also have an 04 330 Performance Package which is also quite quick and drives like a dream - but where I think the Audi's rule is with their interiors - which are far more apealing to BMWs in general - particularly with the new BMW designs...and the same could be said for the exteriors as well (of the new BMWs - don't much do it for me - while Audi just keeps looking better all the time). I also think the AWD has been better executed in the Audi and it really gives one year round confidence (and is so damn fun). Perhaps if I lived in Florida or Arizona or such I would wish I had an M3 over the S4 - but as I don't I'm very glad to have the Audi.

Also I'm looking forward to the new S4 and what Audi will do to it. I have to say - having owned two supercharged cars I really love the idea of a supercharger (I know most Audi fans don't - and I understan d why). But I always felt the supercharger ended up giving a car that was very quick off the line and very linear as well - feeling just like a much larger discplacement engine. Its not really a bad optionfor a performance GT...though it likley will have less mod potential then another bi-Turbo. And I really think Audi did miss out on a segement (like us) who love the idea of modding up our cars to boost their performance way over the top. Yeah the V8 is fantastic - but there is really something to be said for the real sleeper nature of some of our bi-turbos that really can kick butt far beyond expectations.

+1 for the V8

there are several great things about the 2.7T but now with age there are advancements in the 4.2. It would take the new RS4 to keep up with the old S4....but the old dog dose have some new tricks
