Exhaust is a pretty common topic and it look like your fairly new to the forums. Please use the Search tool, exhaust has been beaten to death on the b5.

Having said that, Absolute cheapest is SS autochrome, Borla is good and on the low end of the price spectrum. There is ASP, Miltek, AWE twin 1+2, just plug it into the search!

 

Ihave the MTM cat-back andI love it. It gets loads of complements on sound too. I think the piggy pipes and gutted cats really made it though.

Depends what you want.

I run a custom 3" setup...No cats, no resonators, no mufflers. It roars.

 

Thats an understatement.

 

I did a custom exhaust on my B5 S4 using mandrel bent pipes and magnaflow muffler.

 

My AWE DP and Twin 1 combo has made babies cry, people jump (and often turn with a startled look) and just the other day set off a car alarm as I put the peddle to the floor in a parking garage! I love it....

 

at idle my setup isn't extremely loud, but as soon as the tach goes above 1.2k rpms it rips. at idle it just sounds its spitting farty noises.
