winter tires?
On the S4 I have never used another snow tire. I researched snow tires and there were several that apealed to me (Dunlop, Pirelli etc) - remeber I'm looking for a high performance tire that also does well in the snow. Well we have one really outstanding tire shop in the DC area - Radial Tire. They service a lot of really high end cars and most of the guys there race. Without any disension they recommended the Vredsteins and said they all used them and would not run any other snow tire where performace was the issue. They hammered this point repeatedly. So I went with them - and believe me - I've run them not only in the winter but most of this fall and a few springs ago I ran them till about June. I lose very very little going from 19" Yoko AVS to 17" Vred Wintrac Extreme snow....and that is really saying something. (and the Vreds have arguably better grip in the rain - they really stick!) I've outcornered many a BMW and other supposedly great handling car in these and at very high speeds. I was hitting the heart of The Tail of the Dragon at speeds up to 80MPH and 40-45 in the (hairpin) curves - on snow tires! If you know the Dragon you would be very impressed. Anyway - I have no doubt that my claim regarding these tires is true...and I haven't even recounted my (high speed) adventures in the snow....I believe in these tires big time - they are the superior performance snow tire - the guys at Radial Tire laughed when i brought up other tires for comparision and based on my experience I would agree. Even in the dry - they rock! I could easily keep them on year round (if it weren't for wear issues and running them in high heat - though frankly I've never had problems with them in higher temps or any serious wear issues).
I had narrowed down my choice to either the Dunlops or the Pirrelis when I came accross Vredsteins...and I'm now on my second set of Vreds (the extreme...just had the Wintrac before). Nokian strikes me as being a great tire in the snow - perhaps the best - but not such a high performance tire. I basically can do everything in my Vreds that I can do with my Yoko's and my Vreds are a much better tire then the Toyo Proxis M & S that I ran on before - even in the dry - so much better - the Toyos were complete slide all over the road/weak sidewall/hello wheel damage crap as far as I'm concerned.
