B6 s4

I know in the past that the RS models are the rivals for AMG and M cars but since Audi never made a b6 RS4, was the b6 S4 (4.2) made to be a rival for the e46 m3's??

Technically, i think, the S4 is in the same pack as c55 and 32 amg mercedes, e46 m3, caddy cts-v(1st gen), volvo s60r and maybe the saab 9-3 and infiniti m45 .
