Repairs costing more than the car
I sent my B6 S4 with 4 cylinders misfiring to the dealer just a couple days ago, thinking it probably needs new timing chain guides.
Then I got a call today, telling me all 8 cylinders have very low compression and should probably be replaced with another used engine instead. Total cost? $11,000. I asked if they can just take off the heads and see if it really needs another engine, and that's another $4000 just to take them off and put them back on. What?
AND I DIDN'T EVEN PAY THAT MUCH FOR THE CAR!
As a student, I just can't afford that, nor do I have the time to do an engine out job myself. I can't sell it to the dealership either because the amount they're offering is just not even worth it.
Really could use some help here, what do you guys think I should do?

It'd be nice to have a stronger bottom end, but I'm not planning on any internal mods, so I'll probably just look for another used motor to swap in (it'll be the 3rd motor in this S4) but I haven't been able to find anyone that'd do the swap around my town unfortunately. Also anyone know a good source for used 4.2 please let me know!!
What's the possibility that timing issues on 1 bank could cause all cylinders to lose compression? (all below 60psi) I asked if they could take a peek inside the cylinders for any damage, and they weren't able to fit the camera in there without dropping the engine (is it really that tight?) All I know is the dealership kept pushing me to swap another engine in.

if your looking for a 4.2 i can definetly help you out... at the shop i work at we have PLENTY of them still in the cars and a couple are still running and driving. we also have a block(still with everything in it just no heads/intake, etc.). we sold a full drop out in the past for $1200 SHIPPED with a 90 warranty (and im not 100% on this, maybe 30 days) and the assembled block for $600 with the same warranty and free shipping. We actually JUST got an 05 s4 with a 4.2 in it that runs and drives..
send me a PM if you want me to look into getting you one
thanks,
matt
