The heat does not work on my 1995 Audi A6 wagon (no Quattro). My local Audi repair shop (not a dealer) wanted $1000 USD to rip open the dashboard and clean out the heater core. I resisted this as the car is old and I'm cheap. So now he tells me that it might just be good enough to use a radiator flush. Should I do this? And then take it to the dealer for the flush? Or if this works, can I leave the radiator flush in?

Oddly enough, the heat did work for an hour the other day, but then it quit again. All fans/controls work.
