Default Replacing struts. Help needed!

I have a 2001 Audi A4 B5 Base 1.8t. I ordered new struts, strut mounts and new springs for the front and rear over the phone from a auto parts store. The problem is on the lower part of the front strut where the strut mounts to the knuckle is too narrow. On the rear strut they are too short. Am I missing something here ? The guy said those would fit because they were specific for my car. Any recommendations on the correct replacement struts for my car ?
