Default Trying to diagnose clunking from the front

Whenever I drive slow in a parking lot for example and go over little bumps I can hear the car make a rattle/clunking sound. I also hear it sometimes just starting off in first gear when the front of the car lifts up a little and goes back down. Cruising on the freeway feels smooth though which is making me think that it's not the struts causing this, but who knows. The control arm and tie rod end bushings look ok too. Could this maybe be a problem with the upper strut mounts? If anyone had this problem before or has some advice, please feel welcome to help me out. It feels like I'm driving some old clunker, not an Audi.

Its usually the control arms they are known to go on these cars have they ever been replaced? Did you look under the car completely there are other parts and bushings under it that can make that noise.

sounds like the c/v joints. some will check them for free (and hope that you let them fix it).

I thought a bad cv joint only made a clicking sound when turning. I had a car that did that. The boots were ripped too and leaking grease. My boots look fine right now but could the joints still be bad if that's still the case? I'm really going to do a thourough inspection of everything under there at my next oil change or when I change the breaks.

The first sign is usually a sequencial clicking sound when making a turn. My problem is suspension related so I've narrowed it down to either the strut mounts or control arms. I'm hoping I can hear where its coming from by jacking up the car and shaking the wheel or by moving it up and down.

I had a similar issue with my 2004 a6. Over little bumps, I heard a clunking sound. I thought for sure I was in for a major expense. I took it to the mechanic and he went through the entire car and saw no worn or damaged part. What he did see was a loose cover under the engine compartment. The cover was missing 3 screws and over a bump the cover would hit another piece and make a clunking sound.

This may not be what is causing your issue, but take a look it is worth your time.
