Default Help with Vagcom connection

Hey
I have a generic, ebay, jem-auto, vag com cable. I bought it to reset some lights such as inspection 1 ect.

I have the

311.2 shareware software from ross-tech.

Once you start it tells you to :

Go to options, click the right com port, and save it.

No com ports appear to be right as i get " Com port status: inaccesable" After pressing test on each of the ports.

ANy clues here. I did install the correct drivers, At least i believe i did. I located and downlaoded them on the ross-tech site.

Thanks a lot and any help would be appriciated before i rip this cord in half.

Download the 4XX version of Vag-COM. (I can't remember the actual number but it starts with 4)
Open Windows Device manager.
Look for the the name of your cable; Double click on it.
Read the port that was assigned to it. If it is not assigned to COM 1, 2 , 3, or 4, use the device manager and assign it to one of those ports.
Go back to VAG-COM and test that port.

Make sure the key is in the "on" position before you test the connection.

Windows control pannel-
System-
Hardware-
Device Manager-
Ports (COM &LPT)
Go into the port settings and open and make sure the port/com you are tying to use with vag matches up.

just give them the data of your car age/ engine/ chassis that sort of thing and they will be only too happy to assist you.

VAG-COM License with HEX-USB+CAN Interface
VAG-COM License with KEY-USB Interface

What would you recommend for my car and a beginner tunner like myself?
I think it calls for the CAN interface since my car is newer on the website, but I might be wrong ...
Not cheap either! WOW

the first one because it covers CAN, the second one is for the pre 2001 cars but the first one works with both
