RAR is a zipped file format that you need to unzip. Try winRAR.

http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-...html?tag=txt.1

Unzip the file and reload the driver for the serial device under control panel, device manager. Once loaded, check the device manager for the port allocation. It should be either 1 or 2 if I remember correctly. Then open VAGcom and select the corresponding port number. It should work.

A serial cable won't work with the newer laptops which don't have any COM ports. Only a USB cable will work with a USB port.
Without a license from www.ross-tech.com, you will get only a very limited shareware version.

Don't know if you figured it out yet but,

with the serial to usb cable plugged in
right click 'my computer' click 'properties' then 'hardware' tab, then 'device manager'.

Double Click on the "Ports (COM & LPT)"

That will tell you the port your serial cable is in.

In the ross-tech prefs, change the port to the correct one and you should be in business.

thanx guys, interestingly, com 1 and 2 are free but from 3-8 are in use, but when the cable is installed it automatically chooses com 9. so i manually change it to com 2 but will still not work, the massage still reads PORT OK; INTERFACE NOT FOUND

You have to figure out which port the usb to serial adapter is using.
Do this by going to device managerand looking at the "Ports (COM & LPT)". Try plugging and unplugging the usb to serial adapter while looking at "Ports (COM & LPT)" to locate the port number. Use that port number in vag-com.

Kimi, you need to set the port number on 2 locations. On under the windows device manager and the other on VAGcom. And the device will not be found, unless the port is plugged into the car with the ignition on on position.

At some point one should decide if the time spent making attempts to configure the COM's on a limited features software is worthy.

A friend of mine purchased ($200) some “Digimoto” diagnostic application, serial cable.

Gave it to me for free; I spent good hhh time in attempts to make it functional-new cables, drivers, adaptors, older laptops, latest laptops, COM configs, deconfigs ; anything from the internet… => INVAIN.

If you drive an Audi you should have gotten accustomed with expenses related to the ownership.

Do not get into a position to be slave of your car..

its not all about cost Mr Nemohm its some times about satisfying the yes i can do it myself feeling.Do you have that feeling sometimes Mr Nemohm? if permited i will tell you this, sometimes you win some times you loose but in any case it is self gratifying many in this forum will agree.
A vagcom is a usb cable used in association with a specific software provided by certain companies for Audi and Vw which when downloaded on to your computer, you can litterally comunicate with the soul of your car and even make minor changes if you so desire
