Default No Vag Com readings.

I searched the entire site on this one but came up empty. Maybe somebody can help me out. For the last four years, whenever I took my car for service for whatever reason, the service shops couldn't pull ANY codes. For the most part they did the step by step error elimination to isolate the problem. I wish that was all. Whenever I take my car in for inspection, the DMV can't pull any codes off the car. Their advice was to drive around for a couple of weeks and take it back. Still, no codes. So I always end up taking it to a private shop and coughing up $130 for a damn sticker!! Why can't the private shops pull the codes by utilizing their vag coms? Wanna hear something funny?... Whenever I take it to the dealer, they always pull up a long sheet full of codes!! But they won't give me the readings even though I'm prepared to pay the $120 fee (1 hr labor). They tell me that they will waive the fee if I let them perform the work. Their contention is that they do not use cheap after-market diagnostic tools, but manufacturer approved equipment (hence the hour long process)!! I'm in limbo here. Is the car's computer at a stage only the dealer can decipher or I'm I getting royally ripped off? Anyone with the same problem?

Sounds like you could benefit from purchasing a legitimate VAG-COM cable from Ross-Tech. For twice the price of the dealer's 1 hr labor ($250) you can scan at your leisure, clear codes, perform your own diagnostic work, etc.

Honestly I think this is the single most important thing anybody should have for this car. It was my first big car-related purchase after I bought my car in January 2010. Over and over this cable has proved itself invaluable.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into it. Just in case it doesn't work, can it be returned? Would hate to be stuck with a $250 equipment I cant use.

Ross-Tech has a very extensive support base. They have their own dedicated forum here:
VAG-COM Discussion - AudiWorld Forums
And occasionally chime in here as well. So if it didn't work, perhaps their support team could help guide you (for free, after the cost of their product).
