Hey. I'm interested in buying an audi and I have a few questions. I'm looking at a late 90's a4. I was wondering which is better the 1.8T or the v6 model? Should I get a quattro? Are there any reliability problems with any of the models. Thanks for your help.

 

nice name... search it on these fourms its been covered alot... basically if you want to mod it alot then get a 1.8T for big gains... 2.8 for small mods like exhaust and stuff like that... treat an audi with respect and regualr matience it will last a long time.... go with quattro, i went with fwd because its cheaper and you can lay down som serious rubber... that basically sums it up its too late to go into anymore detail.. do a search for more info

 

The V6 is the more reliable of the two. Plus it comes with the nicer wood grain trim, auto driver seat with real leather, if thats important to you. Even though it has 40 more hp than the 1.8 its very limited in performance mods and you can't extract much hp out of it. The 1.8T on the other hand is a tad lighter, gets better gas mileage and has more potential in terms of increasing horsepower. So if you just want a safe reliable cruiser then choose the 2.8, if your looking to modify the car and go faster then choose the 1.8T, either way you can't lose. This might help. Yes definitely get a quattro. Depending on where you live the quattro system will come in handy. Personally even if I did live where it never snowed I wouldn't want to be driving the FWD version, that just sucks. As for as reliability goes there are few things to bear in mind. The timing belt on these cars should be changed atleast every 80k. If it breaks on you the engine is fvcked. Water pumps and thermostats are recommended to be replaced along with the timing belt. After 100k the control arms tend to wear out and you'll hear that annoying screach or clunk, replacements are not cheap. As long as regular maintenance is kept these cars are very reliable and will last a long time.
