automatic vs. manual
I'm not sure what the exact shift time figures are on the automatics or tip, but usually manuals are faster. I say usually because DSG is probably faster than the human hand. Of course if you're talking racing, there's only one choice: manual. If you have automatic, you will have to change out the whole transmission as opposed to just the clutch with manuals. Launching depends on what type of clutch you're running. With the stock clutch, anything above 3000 or 3500 rpm will just burn the clutch and you won't go fast. But I've seen videos of people launching at 7200 with modified clutches.
Normally, on a straight run, an auto generally will be faster because it shifts at the best points, with no human error in the mix.
This is true for many vehicles.
However, on the audi, because of the lag in the low rpms, I can tell you for sure a maunal is faster.
I have driven both, and the auto is a real dog.
The key is that on the turbos, you need to keep the revs always above 3k. you cant really do this with an auto.
So, i launch at about 3500, slowly letting the clutch out until it starts to move. Once you start to move, you let it out the rest of the way and floor it.
Then you are accelerating from 3.5k to 6k. If you shift at 6k, you will drop in to second about 4k, all power, second gear wont last long. You'll drop into third at 4k also, also all power, but by this point you'll be hitting 60-70mph while you start to run through third. So, Unless you're on the drag strip or a track, you wont redline in third.
This is how I drive it if i am trying to get the fastest speed from dead stop. IE drag strip times.
Anyway, to sum it all up, on the audi you have got to have a manual, no question about it.

I have an automatic and unless you completely suck at shifting the manual will be much faster off the start and throughout. One thing you can do with the automatic that will help a little is to get the GIAC Trip chip which speeds up the shifting a bit.
autos are dogs off the line. manual will own it off the line. top speed is the same 135 because of the limiter but if you take it off with a chip idk. if you get a new clutch you can drop it from 7200rpms
