Default Cheap Blown Turbo Fix!!!

Cheap Blown Turbo Fix!!!

Ok now that got your attention! I like every other 2.7T owner lives in fear of the day that both the turbos will go and meet their maker, and the prospect of a $2500-$5000 bill for replacement looms. For many of us that is potently more than our car is worth, faced with the prospect of the cost of replacing my car I am looking for another option.

I have heard talk of removing the turbos and putting on the manifold for a 2.8 car in place of the turbos. Is this a realistic possibility or an tall tail?

From looking at the Bentley (page 21-1) you would have to do the following:
• Replace the engine manifold for one from a 2.8 car. (does not have the flanges for the turbos just a straight pipe)
• Bridge the gap between where the air would go into the turbo and come out of the turbo (I am sure you would have to do something to fool a pressure censor)
• Bride the gap between where the oil would go into and out of the Turbo.

Question is what else would you have to do? Also I have no clue what the consequences would be from an engine management system point of view given that the air going into the manifold is now at a much lower pressure than it would be with a turbo.

Any ideas or comments?

Thanks
James

Well, you'd lose alot of power and not just from no turbos, but from the lower compression ratio the 2.7's have, wrong ECU tuning for NA, MAF prolly wouldn't read that low (2BAR vs 1BAR), cam and cam timing wrong for NA, injectors wrong size for NA, etc...

James,

You can remove the turbos, disassemble and remove the wheels and shaft, weld the shaft holes shut, reassemble and reinstall. You will lose about 1/3 of your peak power and torque.

But, despite the nattering nabobs of negativism that insist your turbos will blow, if you keep the oil changed there is no reason the turbos won't go 250,000 miles or more.

I'm almost at 147k with a chip, and use Mobil1 0W-40 regularly. They're running fine and I expect (and hope for) a lot more miles. But I did spot a complete K04 kit on ECM? website for $3100. Figure another grand or so for labor -- that's not bad for the hp increase. You can probably replace oem K03s for a lot less - I think the turbos are $300-400 each. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

If you put 2.8L exhaust manifolds on it im gonna find and rip the rings right off your car. Just fix it the right way. The turbo's are ticking time bombs after the 100k mark. Turbo's spinning at 170,000 RPM's can only last so long. If someone with a 2.7T goes 250,000 miles without changing the turbos i'll eat my shoes.
