RE: 95 quattro 90 upgrades?
Hi. You don't say which engine is in your car, an I-5 or V-6. Neither has many performance options available. The tuner market caters to the turbo cars. There is a company in central California near Atascadero called Eurospec that builds race and near race engines for VW's and certain Audi models. The I-5 is basicallya VW 1.8 liter 4 with another cylinder. Pistons, rods, valves and such interchange, so their VW tuning tricks are applied to the I-5. I know from memory they have some stuff for one of the Audi V-6's shared with VW. It is mainly big valves, cams, porting and bored out throttle bodies. They build complete engines too. For turbo engines the choices are much greater. Another company that loves older Audis is Blaufernugen in the upper Midwest, Minnessota or Wisconsin I believe.
Something I saw last week that still has me grinning was a tuner shop in Davis California called 2Bennett Audimotive has a program to put a 4.2 liter V-8 from the A8 in cars like the 4000, Coupe GT and the 90 series. Oh my! Total cost for a used engine installed is around $4500, a fraction of the cost of a turbo conversion. A bonus is the aluminum V-8 is actually 75 pounds lighter than the in line five! 300 hp and less weight from a nice torquey understressed V-8. Why fool with a turbo? They are building a car, this perfectly innocent looking grey Coupe GT,for a customer who intends to register it in California. This will require a trip to the referee to verify it is smog legal, necessary to obtain registration. If he can make a Cal EPA referee happy then I will do the same thing to my car. Imagine a completely stock looking Audi 90, perfectly silent, no exhaust noise or any tell tail clue to what is under the hood, with 300 horses on tap :-)
