I just replaced the wheel cylinders and brake shoes for the rear drum brakes on my 1986 4000S. Right away they started overheating, and when we took the drum apart to look, we discovered that the adjustment key drops down when you apply the brakes, then gets stuck and won't go back up, such that it's holding the shoes against the drum constantly.

First, has anybody else had this problem? Which way does the key face- one side has a little projection, and the Haynes manual was completely unhelpful as to whether that should face in towards the car or out towards the wheel. It *seems* like it should face in, but unfortunately both sides were done so we have no reference.

Is it a matter of lubricating some pieces with anti-seize? We reused the hardware, because it was completely rust-free and looked to be in good working order, but I'm willing to try replacing it. What happens if you just completely remove the adjustment spring and key?
