Default 2003 Allroad 2.7L Power Steering Lines on Rack

Hello!

So, for reasons unknown besides "oh that looks cool" I purchased a 2003 Allroad 6-speed from a guy who "has had it" with this car. Turns out the power steering line blew out at the fitting on the steering rack. I believed I could get this apart easily and get this thing back on the road. $1,000 delivered with extra doors, hatch, and front fenders, how could I say no?

What I'm struggling is removing the back bolt that seems to be 18mm or smaller, but not 17mm. 18 feels loose and I did mar the bolt a little. Would it make more sense to remove the whole steering rack, breaking the other power steering hose (as it's in just as good of condition as the rear line that blew apart), pulling the whole rack out and getting to the bolts out that way? I was trying to get some guidance on youtube videos but every person suggests offset wrenches which I can't get a grip and room to rotate the wrench unless I want to remove the air shock, which I don't want to do. I feel replacing both lines from the rack would make the most sense to avoid having to deal with this problem again soon. I found I can send up a 1/2" drive 18mm socket up between the heat shield a plastic shield, but I can't seem to get the socket to sit all the way onto the banjo bolt. It's mostly up, but there's a smidge that's not. Reading online it seems the rack removal would be the better option, provided the 3rd bolt by the drivers side can be accessed. How much are we looking at in terms of other items to remove to get to this bolt?

I ended up getting a bolt extractor. 19mm was the original bolt size hence the frustrations. Banjo bolt is off albeit in worse condition, but it's off. New hose is on order but now I need a new banjo bolt...

Man this forum is thriving with activity...

Banjo bolt acquired from ECS tuning who happened to have the rear bolt, which is what I needed, they don't have the front bolt. New hose from rock auto was bent funny and required quite a bit of massaging to make it fit. I will say that installing this hose while holding the crush washers on both sides made me contemplate life choices. That has to be one of the more difficult jobs I have ever done.
