Air conditioning Problem??
2004 Allroad with a 4.2, today the air quit working and when I exited the freeway I could hear a loud squealing sound that seemed to be coming from the drivers side of the car. I have had a kind of rattle sound on start up for a bit but was informed that was not to uncommon for the 4.2.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I had the same problem monday. The problem is the ac compressor is shaft driven off a gear driven by a chain off the tc.Moisture has gotten in ther and rusted the end of the shaft. My mechanic thinks he can get a new shaft and set it into the gear further than the oem was. He's ordering the parts monday.Hopefully will have it done by Thursday.I have 145k on mine.Estimated repair cost between $400 and $500.Hope this helps

Interesting, I do live in the Colorado rockies so I see quite a bit of snow, I only have 70K though. The again the cloride the state uses doesn't help. Let me know how that goes if ya could.
Did you get any information on driving? I have to drive to Denver to my friends garage, which is about 90 miles.
Thanks.

The spline end of the shaft is not lubricated and the splines are stripping out.On the new shaft the splines are alot bigger. It was able to give a good bite into the gear in side the motor.Thank God we did not have to pull the motor to fix.Ended up costing about $100 in parts and a little over $300 in labor. After this happened to me someone else on another forum had the same problem.I highly recommend any 4.2 owners to remove the shaft and grease the end of it.

A new interesting one
Air con cost $2k to replace the entire unit, so now I have a cam shaft sensor code, replaced the sensor. Still misfires #1 and #3, swapped everything around and the misfire doesn't change cyclinders, I have maybe half the power that the car normally has and the MIL light stays on even after the codes are cleared. So i am thinking, tensioner for the chain is shot? Causing the cam sensor to be just a bit off and creating the misfire. Thats an R&R for the enigine.
