Default Allroad auto

I own a May2005 Allrd. Apart from the horrible lag on the gbox.I find that if I drive very gently in the interests of economy the damn thing wont change into 5th sometimes until about mph55 (even on the flat or downhill). Yes, I know I can move into tiptronic and do it manually but that defeats the object of having an auto.If I drive briskly away then it does click up better but still reluctant to go into 5th at times.
Also, it's allegedly an adaptive gearbox, haven't seen any signs of it yet no matter how I drive!
Your comments and experience are eagerly awaited.

Default Torque Converter is OFF...

Run a VAG scan and confirm this. Are your freeway RPMs high(like, near 4000 @ 80mph?).
