Headlight Problems

Headlight Problems
for a while ive had the problem of hazy headlights. it seems that only cheaper
cars have this problem and i think ive only seen one audi with the same problem.
they really detract from the look of the car especially right after ive washed it,
ive been using the novus 3,2,1 solutions and its helped but hasnt really improved anything
ive heard of cutting out the front of the headlight and replacing it, but i guess its
illegal here in CA, but its done a lot in Europe. im not into DIY, and not really
interested in slapping down $1200+ bucks for two new headlights
help?
this is how they look right now, i used some novus 2 on them last night right after i washed the car

RE: Headlight Problems
Mine look the same and so do my sisters on her Passat.
The plastic used on many headlight lenses is made of an acrylic material. Not just the cheaper cars have this problem...I've seen many BMW's and Lexus cars with the same problem. I think they haze and turn yellow over time due to exposure to excessive sunlight and heat.
I've also noticed that many windshield wiper fluids contain Methanol. I know Methanol will dry anything out it comes into contact with...so that could be another problem (our headlight washers).
I too have tried one of those headlight restoration kits on my car with no success....but for some reason it worked great on my bosses Explorer.
I wish car companies would go back to using glass...even though it is more expensive and probably harder to form. You think they'd have fixed this problem by now after years of making headlight lenses of this material

RE: Headlight Problems
so i did this last week but i finally got some pics of it. the autobody shop recommended the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit which is supposedly brand new. So i went down to Autozone and picked it up and i was somewhat skeptical. the kit contains different grades of sand paper that you attach to a drill and then some polish. after about an hour and a half of grinding away im proud to say the headlights look brand new. i suggest this kit to anyone with this problem. you can see the before pics above.

RE: Headlight Problems
Looks great. I'll have to get my hands on that kit. I tried one other kit that was supposed to work...but it only seemed to make my lights look worse. Now that i've actually seen proof of a kit working on someone with identical headlights....i gotta try it.
thanks for the post!

RE: Headlight Problems
no problem, glad it helped you out. its a great kit and it worked on both the audi and my moms acura. id suggest getting two of the kits if your headlights are as bad as mine were, the first step took quite some time.
