Default Strange radio behavior

Hey all, 2004 Allroad with the Bose system. Not too long ago, I started the car and the radio went into safe mode, no burnt fuses, no battery disconnects, just decided to do it. Turned the stereo off and back on 5 or 10 minutes later and it worked just fine. Then recently, turned on the car and the radio came on but the screen was garbled and unreadable random pixels. Radio played fine and steering wheel controls worked. If I stop the car and start it up again quickly, sometimes the radio display will flash like it is in safe mode but SAFE never comes up and eventually the radio will play with no display. Any idea on what's going on here? Time for a new radio or is it something else I can look at?

Even better now, stereo powers on and says "CHECK" on the display. Running the VAG-COM against it says the CD interface is "Not OK". Guess I need to pull the stereo and see if something internal has failed as it's the in dash changer. Might truly be time for a new stereo. Is there a compatible Symphony for the 2004 that is better than what I have?
