Default A3 Cam belt

Hi
am new to the forum but joined to try to help my nephew. He has a y reg A3 1.8 turbo that broke down today. Garage thinks on initial inspection that the cam belt may have slipped
Waiting for more info but in the mean time am after some help. Do the valves hit the pistons if the belt slips, breaks. How easy are the belts to change. Thanks for any help or advise in advance.

Yeah if a cam belt breaks the the pistons will hit the valves and the valves are highly likely to bend and this would then be a serious problem as it then becomes very expensive as its serious damage to the engine and can cost hundreds. Also if the cam belt breaks while moving at a high speed this would do more damage as of the speed the pistons are moving causes more damage. changing a cam belt isnt the simplest thing as you would have to take off the front offside wheel then the inner wheel arch cover then get to the cam belt and loosen the tensioner and so on but its not a job for an unprofessional as the positioning of the cogs which the belt sits on have to stay matched! Easiest to seek professional help!
