I have recently purchaced a 2001 A3 1.8 se (60,000 miles, FASH), which i must say is the best car i have driven so far in my life.

I have a few queries that i would like to ask you guys.

Firtsly, i am getting only around 20-25 miles per gallon, is this correct?

Seconly at high-ish revs there is a rattle coming from the underside.

Can anyone help

first post and noticed your ???'s

Had exactly the same car back in 2002, 1.8 SE, lovely car, second A3 I had bought and fell in love with it, consumption you describe is a bit on the low side, not go an answer for that but at high revs the rattling is likley to be a small coupling on the exhaust system broke loose or cracked, mine did exactly the same thing and welded bak together nicely with no problems.

Mind you 4 months later the water pump went and I was told this is a big problem with this model.

 

FYI,

On all Audis/VWs definitely change the water pump every time you replace the timing belt. It is the best preventive maintenance you can do on these cars.
