Default Another Electric Window Problem

Hi.
Hoping one of you knowledgeable folks can help me...
Last week, I bought my first Audi, a 1999 A3, 1.6. It was a private sale, and the seller was up front about the fact that the passenger side window doesn't work, to his credit.
So, the issue is this... It seems like the car "thinks" that the window is already down, when I try and open it. When I try, there is a momentary whir from the motor, then it stops, however if I try to close the window, the motor whirs for a few seconds before it stops. It's like the car tries to close the window and finds something in the way.
I had a bit of a look online, and found a few threads addressing the usual problems; Fuse blown, Window control not re initiated, and Faulty motor.
I deduce from the fact that I hear the motor try to work, that it's not the fuse, because if it was, there would be no sound. Further to this, I tried the suggested method to re initiate the motor, as the previous owner said they had the original battery replaced (hold the button down for 10 seconds, then up for 10 seconds) but still no joy.
Does this mean that my only course of action left is to replace the motor itself? I've been thus far reluctant to do so, because it seems like a bigger job than I was hoping to have to undertake, but with the recent heat, I really need to get that window working to improve the air flow in the car.

Thanks in advance, for taking the time to read this, and for any advice offered.

Audi Evan.
