I started my 2002 A3 (1.8) after a week without using it - as I turned off the driveway into the street a loud 'clunk' came from the front of the car. I thought nothing of it and carried on - but the car went on to make three more similar noises as I drove on. Each time the noise seemed to come when I was traveling at a low speed and perhaps also whilst turning. There is now also a rattling noise coming from the front of the car - which sounds as though something metal has broken or come loose and gets louder when driving on uneven parts of the road. There was no discernible deterioration in the responsiveness of the steering or braking (although I didn't go over 30 mph after the third and fourth clunks).

My initial reaction was the anti roll bar drop links, but does anyone have a similar experience and/or any other thoughts on what this might be?

a small animal probably crawled up in there and built a home in your engine bay. do you smell any burning flesh while driving?
