Default RE: Help! Quick IPod integration question

Hey everyone!

I am new to the Audi forum and I have a basic question.

I am going to install the factory Audi Ipod kit into my 2006 A3. I have been reading many of these posts but having trouble following exactly what to do (manual instructions are fairly vague).

I have pulled the glove box shelf out, and I have descovered an 8-12 Pin Female connector attached to the box.

This connector does not connect with the Audi Ipod converter box. I am assuming this harness and connector is for a CD changer (which I do not have)? Does anyone know if I can use this existing harness? If so how does this connect, since none of the included harnesses (kit) match to the existing one?

Or does this exisiting harness just need to be replaced by one of the new ones that came in the kit? If so I assume that my only option is then to pull the stereo out of the dashboard for this.

Thanks for the adivce

You need to get to teh back of the stereo itself, using two stereo removal keys you can find online, at a dealer, any stereo shop, etc.

Yeah I just bought the Dice Ipod adapter from Enfig.com.

http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/DICE_I_AUDI_T2.html

Going to return the Audi Ipod kit to the dealership, since it seems to be fairly un-intuitive.

This Dice Ipod kit seems to be the way to go after researching for a while. It has both the Ipod adapter/AMI (Audi Music Integration) feature, along with a stereo 3.5mm mini jack (head phone). All that and this particular kit mounts straight into the pre-existing CD changer wiring harness in the glove box.

So truly this should be plug and play, no pulling the radio and re-running a new wiring harness.

Hope this helps those looking for a better alternative than factory Audi Ipod Adapter.

Cool glad that helped. Didn't seem like anyone had laid out theoptions clearly. The Audi Ipod integration comes with only harnesses that you will need to run and install directly in back of the radio. Unless you know the pinout, tying into the CD changer will be very difficult. I will let you know how the Dice Adapter installs once i get it next week, it should be pretty simple. I will be sure to post plenty of pictures too.

Why buy a DICE when the GROM kit is identical and is half the price?

Didn't see the identical Grom adapter. The only Grom interfaces I found were either Ipod Connectors or stereo 3.5mm connectors. I didn't see a Grom that had both connectors. If you have a link for an adapter with both inputs please share.

As I recently discovered, if you order the Grom, you will also need to order the removal keys AND P.I.E. AA3-HAR. Grom does not sell that harness, and was unaware that you needed it for CD pre-wired Audis. They now know, thanks to me. I just installed the harness and now everything finally works perfectly. The Grom is the best deal if you already have the tool and do not need the PIE harness, but if you do, the link I posted earlier looks like a better deal for much less hassle. Grom will tell you you can cut your existing CD changer connector, but that looks very difficult to do correctly and could easily screw up the whole thing.

The M.O. for any of these kits is apparently the the same, once installed correctly. All speakers work right, the stereo turns off after removing the key and the wheel controls work the same as they did for the radio.

Note that unless you have 5 or fewer playlists, you are far better off leaving the CD selector on CD1 ("basic mode" according to Grom) and choosing playlists directly on the IPod.

??? GROM sells the tool for a few dollars and you can sub the CD changer cable for the same price so you don't need the AAR-HAR adapter.

I've got the 2008 A3 S-line (no Nav or BT) with the iPod intergration in the glovebox. this is great and all but I have an iPhone. Obviously I *could* plug it into the glove box but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a phone. I can hear it ring if a call comes in but I can't answer it.

What is anyone doing in a situation like this? I have a 2-Gig Nano as well that I will be loading up with songs and it'll just stay in my car at all times but I'd stlii like to figure out a way to get my iPhone to work with my car or am I just dreaming at this point?

I'd have got the Nav and BT if I could have but this is a company program car so I really had no choice in what I got. I was lucky enough for it to have the S-Line and it's Black on Black with the Open Sky System so I'm not complaining.

Maybe after my year in this car is up I'll try to get what I really want in an A3!
