Hi all,

I have a 52reg 1.8T i think there might be a problem with the turbo. Should the turbo whistle when i push the accelerator down? Also the turbo does not kick in until 3000 rpm and when it does it is not very quick. Is this normal or is there something wrong.By the way this is my first turbo car.

Sounds like you have a problem.

The turbo will whistle briefly as it spools up. It is more audible with the windows down, and more pronounce if the car is chipped, etc. The spool up for a 1.8T should happen by 2k rpms, so the whistle will happen just before that and the boost should be strong from there out. Sounds like you have sticking vanes, a boost leak, etc. I'm not the master at diagnosis, but you need to get that fixed very soon. Blowing a turbo could easily destroy the entire engine.

I have got a A3 1.8T on a 02 plate

My Turbo whistle is fairly loud and promanant and kicks in around 2K - 3K but it is definatly not slow. I can normally garuntee a win against most cars , Including GTI's

I have driven a few Audi turbos and all have been fairly loud with the turbo whistle, nothing to worry about

the fact you think it is slow is a problem, unless you have come from driving an RS4

Yeah, I'm basically more of a Noob than thread owner...

I test drove my soon to be mine 02 S3...This little baby also whistles from around 2.5k rpm and whistle through the gears quite prominently...my difference is she is "Foocken" fast in response...

Are you gents advising that the whistling should eventually stop once you have driven the car for a bit...or should the whistle always be prominent?

Whistling sound is your turbo spooling up. If the sound stops, then your turbo is gone, and that very fast car is slower than snot. That is unless the turbo broke, dumped oil into your intake and seized your engine. I guess that the whistling would stop then too, but so would you with the rest of the car. Not pretty!!!

Amazing how that whistling sounds eventually evolves into one's perfect taste in music...
