Default just brought a new audi a3!!!

ok so its not brand new, and its only a 1.6 2004 but its my first audi after many vw golfs!!!!

my questions are what are the main differences between my 1.6 and the higher spec models, more specifically is the ride height and suspension different, because my first mod will be some new alloys and i was wondering if i put 17" on a 1.6 a3 will it look sad?

i have seen some with 5 stud fitment, 112 dia, 45 offset with 225/45 X 17 ZR MICHELIN tyres in a local paper will they fit and look good?

Westcoast, just came back from the dealer. I've been going back and forth between the GTI w/ dsg and the A3 w/dsg S-Line. Test drove the A3 yesterday with my wife. She liked the A3 better than the A4(had to test drive it too in Quattro and CVT versions....Quattro felt rough and the CVT a bit sluggish, maybe because the A4 is a bit heaverie than the A3). I was surprised. I always liked the looks of the A4. Anyway, we both thought that the S3 was comfortable (we took our two sons, 16 and 10. BTW, 16 yr old is 6') and very responsive. Hadn't thought about getting the "open sky" pkg but it seemed to make the interior a bit more roomy. Anyway, your A3 looks like it has exactly what I want: white or silver (be interested in seeing one in ocean blue too); S Line pky; open sky; tech pkg too. I saw your pics of the exterior....great thanks. Could you post some interior pics? The version I drove had the premium pkg and not the sport seats. I think I've seen the sport seats and they don't have the pwr seats.....waaaaaa. Also, could you give me an idea of what you paid? I'm here in Savannah and the closest Audi dealer is in Charleston....2 hrs away. There is another in Jacsonville, FL that might be about the same distance away but it's kind of hard to go back and forth. Also, am wondering if the local VW dealer will do service and warranty service on the A3. I'd guess that they could work on the mechanicals as they are the same as the GTI but who knows??? Anything you can tell me would help. Thks. Cheers

Interesting,

Originally I was out to buy the new GTI as I have a 03 Jetta Wolfsburg. I landed up trading my Jetta for the GTI and the GTI is for my wife and I landed up with the A3 as I felt it was more fitting to my age (38) although I plan on driving the GTI on days off. (I'm a hotel manager so the Audi is touch more conservative). I find the A3 to have more room and sport seats are solid and quite firm. I had an A4 loaner for 2 days and it was too big and had lots of vibration between 45-70 mph and felt heavy.

For the pricing I paid 42K (Canadian Dollars) but the invoice should have been 46.5.

The attachments will show larger pics.

Great to hear from you. Thanks for the pics. I was concerned with the sport seats on the S Line pkg. How do you like them vs the premium? I must say, I drove the premium and did enjoy the power seats and they did feel good. Think I might miss the pwr seats as the S line is manual. What do you think? I do like the idea of some of the other features of the S line pkg....sport suspension and a bit different front end look. Where did you get that plastic/rubber liner for the trunk? Is it an accessory? Have one in my wife's Murano and we think it's a great idea. BTW, a bit older than you...53 and I like both the GTI and the A3. The think I like the most is the 2.0T and the DSG. MY car is a 97 Maxima SE, full leather and Bose. The only thing missing was the cold wx....heated mirrors and seats...waaaaa. Oh yeah, it's a 5spd.....I love it! HOWEVER, I really like the DSG. A bit hard to compare $ to CD $. I kind of like the center stack controls a bit more on the GTI and it also seems a bit more roomy in the front. What a quandry! My wife likes the A3 and now I'm leaning back to the GTI. We are planning on trading the 03 Murano and giving her the new car. Now I'm thinking....give wife the Maxima (she does like it but complains now that I've put H&Rs and Tokico Illuminas on it....lowered bout an inch) and me take the GTI. Or she'd get the A3, she does prefer the 4 doors. I've got 4 kids, one is UGA grad and now living in MI. One is a soph at Valdosta State and gets home on vacations and summer but when here doesn't necessarily "go" with us. Two boys remain: one a HS junior and the other a 10 yr old. So, I'm thinking do we really need another four door. Gosh, didn't think picking out a new car would be so darn hard. Like to hear more of your impressions. Cheers

Hey west coast, please let me know where you got that cargo liner (mat) from.
My work requires me to transport some instrument trays at times, and they tear up the fabric.
thanking you in advance.

The cargo mats are Audi products, I also have the monster mats. I have the sport seats with cold leather package and I have no problem with the manual adjustment. The sport seats sit a bit lower so you really feel the road.

I've driven the GLI, the GTI both manual and DSG, and the A3 both manual and DSG, and the A4. Hands down, the A3 wins. I prefer the manual transmission in all of them, but if you're custom to an automatic, then the DSG is a prize! Don't go for the VW, it's just not nearly the same car as the A3. I know they share most of the same components, but there is a major difference. Drive them both again and experience the Audi touch.

Cheers!
