mpg in sport mode on automatics
well the salesman i bought my car from told me my mpg would decrease like crazy in sport mode and i usually only use it when racing people from lights or just for fun because its a hell of a lot of fun to drive my a3 in sportmode. what i was wondering is if anyone has actually tried it and saw how much less mileage they got driving in sport mode full time because if it isnt that much then id be in sportmode 24/7. And is it good or bad for the car to be doing so.

Like you, I only use Sport mode in small bursts, but based on the RPMs I would estimate that you should expect 20 mpg or less in Sport mode 24/7 (city driving). When I drive the car hard, I get about 22 mpg in the city; that's approx. 50% in Drive and 50% in manual mode shifting at 3k+ from every light.

Well, mycar is always in "sport" mode, because I have a real man's car.......a manual transmission.[:-]
Anyhow, I haven't ever gotten below 20mpg, after the car was broken in, and I'm sure that I drive my A3 continuously harder than anybody else. I can't help it.
Cheers!

After.
Except, when I use racing fuel the mileage drops to 19mpg. That's obviouslywhen I'm driving the hell out of it and tune the engine for the higher octane.

RE: mpg in sport mode on automatics
Just yesterday I was on a 400-mile trip in my 2006 2.0T DSG, and compared the instantaneous mileage in 6th and 5th on a flat, straight stretch of Interstate. At a steady (cruise-controlled) 75 mph, 6th showed 42-44 mpg, in 5th it immediately dropped to 36-38 mpg. Remember that Sport mode blocks out 6th gear, except when you use the paddle to upshift - so it only hold that gear until reverting to auto-mode a few seconds later. BTW, under full throttle acceleration both "D" and "S" upshift in my car at ~6800 rpm.
I got 29.4 mpg for the entire trip (almost entirely in "D"), driveway to driveway, including crossing the Cascade mountains twice and running with A/C enabled ("Econ" off) for the return half of the trip. Would have beena boring trip, but it was my first road trip in this car.

Oh Chef. Why do you keep trying to start trouble. LOL. Now our DSG brothers are going to feel the need to defend their manhood. And we will have to see another post singing the virtues of DSG and how it's okay for the left foot to be idle.
