Default Power steering issue, replaced rack feels wrong

Recently my power steering failed in my '03 A3 2.0TDI (100,000 miles). I had a red steering wheel light on my dashboard so I took it to a mechanics. Long story short, they've fited a "new alternator clutch unit" and a "new steering rack and wiring loom". I picked the car up today and it doesn't feel right at all. The steering is heavy and it isn't feeding itself back to centre when I turn corners. The mechanic claims the new rack may take time to "bed in" and to call them in a few days if it doesn't improve but I don't buy it at all.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Does it really take time for a new rack to work as it should?
