According to my Audi dealer all or mostAudi and I gather VW speedo's in begining in 2005, 2006 and some 2007 are not giveing correct speeds being about 6 to 7% fast. I have confirmed this though testing, and also confirm that at keast in my case the ODOMETER is correct. One way to confirm if your odometer is ok is to time how long it takes your car to travel one mile based on your odometer. If it comes in over 60 seconds at 60 MPH then your speedo is fast. On mine it took a little 64.17 seconds on average. If it comes in at 60, AND youKNOW your speedo is wrong then your odometer is also wrong.
Apparently Audi/VW has no fix for this. Frankly I think that is a crock of s%^t [:'(]given what we pay for these cars they ought to get this right period. No fudging for tire size allowed!

I "measured" my speed against a state calibrated 1 mile distance using a stop watch and the cruise control.
In each run, my speedometer was indicating a higher speed. I ran at 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80 mph and the calculated speed difference was 3.1, 3.7 4.1, 4.5 and 4.9 mph LOWER than the speedometer indicated. Even allowing for a slight variation in the time to depress the stop watch button at exactly the same time for each and every run, the variation would not be more than between a .10 of a second and .25. Thiswould translate into a speed difference of about 1/2 mph, give or take. My odometer seems to be OK but aren't they driven off the same readings. To be honest I don't know how the speed in calculated on these newer autos. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
So I have a 4-5% error in the speedometer reading. If I have it and, according to many posts, others have this "problem" as well, what can we do about it?
Do you think Audi will do anything?? I doubt it but for what we spent to purchase these upscale autos, you would think an accurate speedometer would not be to much to ask.I think a Yugo hadjust as accurate a speedometer.
Has anyone any suggestions as to how to approach Audi??

From a service point of view I believe all that is involved is that you have a dealer connect to the on-board diagnostic (OBD) socket on most cars to perform mileage correction, adjustment, calibration. If you already know the extent of the error, then the dealer should be able to correct this easily.
Thanks for the suggestion. I need to bring it in for a couple of other things so I'll give them the data and hopefully they will make an adjustment. I'll post the outcome of the encounter with the Audi dealer.
My cell has a GPS navigator, which is pretty nice for a cell app. So I used this to check my speedometer and found about 2-3 mph discrepancy. I set the cruise to 80 on the nose, and my little GPS tracker varied between 76.2 and 77.8. Thats about 5%.
I have the same problem in my 2003 A4, 2.4 V6. Speed error of roght on 5% at 100 KPH (Australia). I have frequently measured the time to travel a measured distance and got consistent results.( many highways/freeways have distance markers every Km).
Local dealer tells me "they are all like that " and that he has tried to make an adjustement but the "computer wont let him change it". I havespent hours reading up on various road regulations in different countries and all sorts of comments from various people. But .. I havedrivenother cars with speed accuracy around the 1.5 to 2% mark, local toyotas and holdens for eg. How come Audi who claim to have such high technical ability say they cant change it.. I would love to hear from someone who actually knows if it can or cannot be changed on an audi.

That is a good question. I was pleasantly surprised to find mine within 1mph variance when I hooked up the GPS. I'm sure that the calibration can be changed via VAG-COM, but not sure the code. Maybe a little research on ross-tech.com???
Cheers!
Cheers!
When I am travelling at 80mph (as measured by my GPS, a Magellan Maestro 3100) the speedometer in my A3 shows about 84mph.
In my wife's C230 the speed indicated by the electronic speedometer vs. that by the same GPS never differ by more than 1mph.
