i seem to be getting a noise (rattle) coming only in the first gear from low revs.


Being that it is my first Audi i was wondering if anyone experienced could help?

1999 2.8Q 38000 miles

 

i have this prob to. you have a chip in first gear. it is not "realy" bad. the noise over time will get worse(years) but will not do any more damage. i have drive with mine for almost 4 years. the only solution is to replace the whole transmission. to get a used tranny will be about $800-$900 from a junk yard. a rebuilt one will cost about $1500-$2000. a new one will cost $5000???. dont forget to add labor 600-1000+ depending on local shop or dealer.


do you have any type of warentee? i would look into it kinda low miles on it to. i have 110,000 on mine noticed noise around 70,000. it is just annoyoing/ embarrising to have this noise on a nice expensive car.

as it not an isolated problem i'm sure Audi must know that the tolerance of the first gear is not good enough for the 2.8Q.

the biggest problem for people thinking of changing it is that whats the guarantee its not gonna happen again?


Audi must know what is happening and are keeping it hush hush.

does it only happen in first gear? cuz i have the same problem when i start to accelerate out of first.. but it will go away once i get to about 2500 rpms

 

only happens in first gear and it just varies with the rpm

 

mine sorta goes away cant realy hear it over the enging. 2500-3000 rpm is the most annoying range.

quite a few audis have this prob but all in all it's a small percent. to AoA its just another thing we certin few owners have to deal with.
