Trisaab, someone else was in the same situation as you are right now. Here's their thread:

I'm really happy with my A4, bought last December. One thing though... you must find one with Quattro (AWD). Or else, you'll have to pull over to the side of the road in the snow to put on chains while people like me drive by you in my A4 with Quattro. It handles better when it's dry as well.

I went ahead and bought the 03 cabriolet. So far so good. It's giving me about 25 mpg in combined commuting kind of traffic (half expressway).
Had a bit of an annoying knock or rattle in the passenger window/dash area. Happened to put the top down...drive a bit...noticed it was gone (the noise). Top back up...noise still gone. Again go figure. Really love driving this thing. Getting a lot of head turns with the tan top and interior over black body.
Also...have noticed no oversteer with the front wheel drive. And, as an aside....we just had about 18 inches of snow in the twin cities. Not an issue with the FWD. I'm sure the quatro is even more sure footed on snow....but driving sanely through it...and not going crazy.....i was just fine.
