Potential S4 Buyer (Need Help!)
Hi All,
I currently drive an 01 Acura CL Type S and I'm looking to get a B5 model S4. I'm curious what options I should get and what color combos are hot and rare. Any additional information you think is relevant to my purchase is much appreciated.
Now a few questions...
How does the S4 compare to the A4? I know the engine is more powerful, but is it that much different? What about ride quality versus the A4.
Will I notice a significant power difference between what I currently drive and an S4?
Thanks!

1. The B5 S4 performance is worlds apart from the A4 - it has monstrous power. Think of the A4 as a VW and the S4 as a Porsche. (I'm gonna hear it from the A4 owners now!!!)
2. The ride (between a B5 S4 and a B5 A4) will be stiffer, but barely noticeable. You'd have to ride in each, back-to-back, before you would notice that the S4 is a bit stiffer.
3. The B5 S4 can dust the Acura every day.

i just bought a b5 s4 last week, im loving every bit of it. I already put 1,000 miles on it already. Performance wise Its just awesome, although i think the stock suspension is a bit on the spongy side, I will be upgrading soon. only thing i wish it could have is a cup holder to fit a super big gulp and have better gas mileage... but you cant really have both. also ... ive gotten 2 compliments from complete strangers on my s4..... never got that with my honda lol

think of it this way, Audi imported 5,000 S4 a year between 2000-2002. so there is 15,000 cars in whole US. Honda sold 380,000 Accords last year in the US, do not even know about other models....
I like the Cl Type S and I've seen some that are quite quick - but basically in my chipped/modded b5S4 I can run circles around them. The torque in the S4 is simply amazing - power at all revs and the AWD is also great. A4s are nice - and those with the Turbos can be modded to be very fast - but in genral the S4 is awhole different beast IMO. I agree with jazz that the stock suspension is a bit spongy (but the car still holds nice) - with my lowered suspension with H & R coilovers it is very tight (some - like my wife say harsh...but I love it...) with very very little body roll. A fantastic car IMO. I personally like the styling (and practicallity of the Avant [wagon]) - and IMO its more unique - don't see many around at all - but some of the most wicked S4's I've seen have certainly been sedans. Can't go wrong either way. Of the colors I love my Nogaro Blue (the best) - but also like the Imola yellow (probably the rarest color I would imagine), and red is very nice as well.
I do like the CL/TL-S models and found them to be quick. However once I drove the S4, I was hooked. Now with the upgrades I have completed, I am even more impressed. The AWD is an added bonus and handling is superior.
Thanks for the responses everyone and not baggin' on me because I try a Honda/Acura.
I think my heart is set on an S4, but I've heard upgrading them is expensive business. How much does it cost to chip it? What about upgrading the turbo and intercooler? What is the best bang for the buck performance mods?
Thanks

My APR chip (2000 S4) was 700 installed. Also recommended was upgrading the diverter valves, which was an additional 120. I could absolutely feel a difference. I want to put it on a dyno but no one has a AWD dyno in my area.
Go here www.goapr.com and chose s4

another great thing is if your in CA like me... your exempt from the smog dyno, so no 15 and 25mph runs, they just rev it a bit.. I have to remove and reinstall my kit from my civic every 2 years (PITA!)
