1.8T vs 2.8 - NO not a performance question
an A4 will be fine for your needs until the kids are reasonably grown. No point in buying a bigger car than you need, right?
The A4 2.8 will be way more fun to drive than an A6, especially if you get a manual.

Thanks for all the advice, I will check out the A6 as well. It appears for the $$$, a used Audi can't be beat. I'm glad I thought to check pricing, I never suspected how far my $$$ could go. Now I just need to read up on things to look for when purchasing and general maintenance issues. The A8 appears to be reasonably priced as well, but.... no standard transmission available that I could see. I will not drive an automatic!!!
+2 for the A6. They are similarly prices to the A4's. Since they are bigger, the performance & handling is not going to be as good as the A4. A6/Passat is more of a family car, easier to get the kids in/out of the car seats. It will be more work getting them in/out of the back of an A4. I have seen a couple of A6's in a manual, but good luck finding one. The vast majority will be automatics. Look around... you'll eventually find what you're looking for. Good luck in your search!

You guys are recommended cars that cost more than what hes looking at... hardly makes sense.
He isnt comparing a 2.0T to a 3.2 motor, so clearly he isn't looking to spend 30 grand. Recommend stuff within the 1.8T/2.8 range please...
Go 2.8 for reliability, back is snug but will do fine till the kids are 12 years old at least... no issues.

And, the a6 is not out of his price range, a used a6 is not much more than a used a4.
When I was buying my A4 at the stealership, I saw a CPO A6 for sale
2002 A6 3.0Q automatic
42k miles
$22,970
With a CPO car, you'll get a 6 year/100k mile Audi warranty. If you're not looking to spend this much $, I might suggest looking in the local classifieds. Another good resource that I used is www.cars.com. This site lists cars for sale at franchised dealerships and independent dealers as well.

$23K is a far cry from $5-7K. I'm just completing the sale of my 91 NSX daily driver for $22.5K (it needs about $5K in transmission work, thus the cheap price). The idea is bank as much of that as I can, while still getting something fun to drive that's reliable, good in snow and a decent kid hauler. If I were going to spend $23K it absolutely would never be on an Audi after seeing how quickly they depreciate.
A6 is definitely toward the top of my list. There's even a 2.7T available right near me for $8500, though I know nothing about its history yet. I'm waiting until I have the $$$ in the bank before I start bothering people with questions. I've had buyers back out before and don't want to waste anyone's time. My mechanic is trying to talk me into a 2000 RL, but again, FWD and automatic?? Ewww.......
