Just bought a 1.9TDI 2004 A4 (in Ireland). Beautiful car. I was looking into getting the engine chipped to get an extra few bhp out of the engine. What does the term 'PD' mean whan discussing a diesel engine? Aslo how do I know if my car has a 'PD' engine?? Any help greatly appreciated ...

Any info I can find on it seems to be related to the VW Jetta. There is the article about the engine though.

 

Pull off the engine cover. On the right hand side of the engine when looking at it from the front there may be a pump with 4 lines coming out of it going to the engine nozzles, right next to the glow plugs. If you have this setup you dont have pd. Otherwise you do.

 

PD means 'pumpe düse' indicating that there is a pump in each injector.
This setup gives a very high working pressure (around 2000 bar), wich again gives finer fuel spray and more complete combustion.
It also has much better control of injected fuel volume, and injection time than the old system.
End result more torque/power and better efficiency.
