1996 A4 Engine Swap
If you need to ask, there is really nothing to swap it out with or "upgrade".. The wiring schematics alone would make it impossible to explain to a novice..
My suggesting is to keep what you have and either add a turbo or nos if you feel you need the extra power.
A small "wet" shot of Nos would probably give you the excitement your looking for at the most economical cost and the least amount of work.. A turbo will require tuning and a lot of custom plumbing..

The US version of the 1996 A4 has a number of unique parts, fitments, and features which make most modifications challenging. The good news is that the 12V 2.8L engine is one of the most reliable this company ever made -- no CCAs, cam chains, etc. to worry about. Just drive it and enjoy it, as I do.

I am wanting to find out what other engines I can swap out for my 1996 A4? It's not a turbo or quattro. Thanks.
