1997, 2.8 A4 refuses to start.
Hi there, I need some advice regarding a 1997, 2.8L A4 which has become more stubborn that my wife.
Betsy died shortly after I replaced her power steering pump pulley. I started her after the procedurewithout incident. It was onlyafterI topped up the power steering fluid, that she refused to start again.
There is no spark at the plugs when cranking and no fuel being injected into the cylinders, although there is pressure at the fuel rail. I haveconfirmed the correct operation of the Ignition Amplifier (TCI), Hall Sensorand theresistance across the Coil Pack was measured to be 11.4 Kohm. I have carried out continuity testson the wiring from the crankposition sensorthrough to the coil pack without finding any fault. I hooked up a laptop with diagnostic software, which gives me a response that the ECU cannot be accessed, and no further faults besides my wheel speed sensor(transducer) which is apparently intermittent.
Other sensors, like the temp sensor, being inoperative is inconsistent with the symptoms.
I have the suspicion that the ECU is not sensing ignition,(ie the reason for no fuel being injected)but I cannot locate any such thing. My biggestproblem is that Irequire a proper workshop service/ repair manual for this vehicle. I have approached Audi,South Africa and they were unwilling to sell a copy to me, for some or other reason. On the18 April 2007 I booked the vehicle into Airport Audi, Gauteng, SA,for their earliest available opening on02 May 2007. I would like to get the car on the road before then and to be honest, this hasbecome somewhat of an obsession.
I would appeciate any advice which I could use in addition tothe troubleshooting which I performed above, and/or any assistance with regards tolocatinga comprehensive manual and the costs involved.
Kind regards
VA

I had the same issue with my buddy's 1.8t - his ECU was fried. Check your local scrap yards for a replacement - www.car-part.com

Check fuses, especially the ones for your ecu and fuel pump. They are located in the fuse "box" behind the pannel on the side of your dash. You have to keep your door opento get to them.

turn ignition on and listen for the fuel pump to cycle for a second ( if nothing ) then it could be the speed sensor/ crank sensor or simply a fuse to the fuel pump,
other problems are immobiliser/fuel pump relay-fuse/fuel pump but no spark at the plugs leads me to think crank sensor
