I have a 1998 Audi A4 wagon. When driving it tends to pause between gearshifts, for probably less than a second before going into the next gear. During this time the engine rev's up as if it went into neutral. It seems to only happen in 1,2 and 3rd gear. The others seem fine.

The mechanic said it is because the engine mounts are bad, but I just don't see the connection here.

Anyone else encountered a similar problem?
