2001 A4 1.8T Quattro turn signal hazard button
My 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro turn signalsstopped workingtoday. Sometimes I get a single flash of light, but they areessentially dead. I checked the fuses & they are fine. I have headlights, brake lights, and emergency flashers, which tells me the bulbs are OK. There is no buzzing sound from the center console. This seems like the hazard button relay switch. The only thing I haven't tried is banging on the dashboard.
I am not a car fix it person by any stretch of anyone's imagination, but I am motivated by the fact thatImust make my one and only car drivable again. Plan B involvescalling AAAfor a110 mile towto my local Audi dealer. Dudley Doright posted photos & instructions that I think I can followat https://www.audiforums.com/m_146946/tm.htm
I need a little more help though. Please. If my photo posts, here is a picture of my center console. I think it's identical to Dudley's.
What is the exact name of the part I need to purchase? I've seen it called the relay behind the flasher button, the turn signal relay, the indicator relay, the blinker relay inside the hazard button, the hazard switch, and the turn signal relay. Is therea standard name for this part?
There are two auto parts stores & a Wal-Mart near me. Is this an itema regular auto parts storeor Wal-Mart might carry? Is this an Audi only part? Is it unwise to buy anything other than a genuine Audi part for this?
What tools must I purchase? Am I likely to findthem at my auto parts stores or at Wal-Mart?Are theyspecial tools made only for Audi?
Am I correct in thinking the red hazard light and the blackrectangular case that surrounds itareone singlepart? Everything that fixes the turn signals (assuming this is the problem), is contained within that one part?
I am not clear what Dudley did with the blank button that's between the fog light button & the hazard button. What is the procedure for removing it? And why was it removed? Will I be accessing the part I want to remove from the side, via the hole behind the blankbutton?
Any information & advice youhave will helpme! Those of you who have done thisprobably knowwhat I should avoid doing. God willing, this won't be any worse than changing the bad Pentium Processor I once had in the nether reaches of my computer!
Thank you!

I had this problem along time ago on my '01. All I did was buy the relay from the dealer for 50-60 bucks. AllI did was get a small flathead screwdriver and gently pry the plastic peice around the hazard button and cup holder and foglight buttons(be careful). Then pull out the old relay, plug in the new one, then put the plastic peice back on and you should be good to go. I had no experience, and I was able to swap it out in about 10 minutes........
well, just did the operation on my '00 a4 avant. kncincolor is right, it's way simple. didn't need special tools. i took a metal paint spatula like bob ross used, wrapped it a bit in masking tape, and pried off the dash piece. the way the clips work, the piece wants to be pulled out straight towards the rear window. then i used a nail head as a hook to pull out the hazard module, undid the harness on the rear. installation is reverse. so simple! total cost was $43, and some local garage wanted $195 to do it!
