2003 a4 1.8t just added apr chip
two days later engine bogged out. lost most power felt like it was getting too much fuel not enough air or other way around. anyway made it work check engine light blinking. when i got out smelled like burning oil. had the car for 8 months never any problems drives like a dream. brought it to the dealer was told it might be engine coil? bad diverter valve? or worst out of the 3 was told by service tech that there has been oil sludge problems with 1.8t $2500 to replace oil pan, pump, anything oil related. also said replace the engine $8000. last two are covered by extended warranty. anyone hear of any of these problems or know of any solutions. i should be hearing back form the dealer today or tomorrow will post news as it comes. help me please.
did you tell the dealer about the chip??? how many miles? yes oil sludge is a major issue with the 1.8t. and a blinking CEL is not good. what were the symptoms of the drive? rough? any ticking under the hood? have you had the codes pulled yet? let us know and we can point you in the right direction.
I dont know if this is related but, i got my 1.8t remapped by a company, who boosted the bhp from 163 up to just 200bhp. The cars performance was much better the turbo kicked in much earlier and the pull was immense. UNTIL after about an hour of giving it some the oil light came on, then went off. Then later, the same thing but this time it kept coming on and going off (after i gave it some). On ringing the company they said it was 100% nothing to do with the remap, but i had them put it back to standard (they kept telling me that even if i did it was a much bigger problem which i'd have to sort out anyway) and now everything is fine........ coincidence??!??
Change your coil packs, I blew two of them the day i got my car APR tunded with the stage 1+ (with EFIs) with the exasct same symptoms. Put the new coils in and i've been stylin ever since (5 months).
just heard back from dealer. no i didn't tell them about the chip. switched everything back to factory settings before that. problem was the coils, never heard of that though.$142 with labor they gave me a deal i guess she said labor would of been $150 by itself. i was told this was a common problem anyone know of any upgrades for the coil or can anyone explain what the coil is and does.
the coil creates the spark, rather then having a main coil and a distrubiter, the car uses a coil for each cliynder, it's the part that plus into the top of the spark plug. very easy to do on your own. There was a period were the coil packs were having issues and that has been fixed in all the new ones. I'm not sure if the APR tuning uses a higher voltage, or it's just running hotter for some reason, but the new set should ahve you running good for awhile. I have met racers that keep a full set of coilpack in the back of there cars because they do blow (i have a set in my trunk now too).
Keep in mind that if you are pushing the engine harder, there may be a weak point that you haven't been pushing hard enough to fail, but since your getting more out of the engine now it's more stressed so your goign to find that things will be more prone to show issue you may have not seen before. just basic common sence.
