I have a 2003 5 speed and sometimes it is hard to shift into second (kind of like when you downshift into first with a little speed, tough) and it has popped out on me 3 times. Its under warr. so I am going to take it in, just wondering what the problem might be or if anyone else has had this issue.

idk where u live, but here in NJ i've noticed in the morning when its reeaallyy cold (like 22 degrees) second gear pops out sometimes when i first start driving.

 

Yea I don't think mine ever popped out but in the morning when it's cold it's a little tough shifting from 1st to 2nd until it warms up.

 

I have the same problem occaisionally on my 01 1.8, mostly when its cold.

 

Same here, on a cold morning it's a little hard to get it into 2nd. But after a few minutes and it warms up it's fine.

 

I also have the same problem in CT in the morning however I also have it (however not to the same extent as 2nd) going into third... My shifter feels very clunky and segregated, is there any chance it needs adjustment or I need to replace the fluid?

 

i have it to and i asked the audi service guys when i had it in to test drive it and he said it was the syncro was a little off. He said just take it easy on it and like the rest of the people mine also gets better when the car is warm.

 

I lost a lot of that sloppy shifter feel after installing the snub mount. I would also suggest allroad trans mounts.
