5spd Problem?
bentframe - Located in IL outside of chicago. My friend knows a person who is a audi tech, so hopfully we can just pull out the trans and fix that part. The trans doesn't look that hard to take out, but I didn't look at it really close.
apg96 - I haven't drove it around much since I am waiting to sell my current car and then transfer the plates ect. Driving around town I pretty much just leave it in 2nd. But I believe I heard it everytime I had it in 1st today... I'll double check it tomorrow.

Well I've been talking to a couple guys about it including a audi tech that I know. It can't be the synchro because it makes the noise after the synchro is engaged. Then I was thinking possibly the presure plate or clutch, but then it would be in ever gear not just 1st. A friend that is a ford tech said that is could possibly be the rod vibrating (which it is) into the heatsheild causing the noise... but I don't notice any marks in the heat sheilds. So I'm thinking it might be a broken tooth on the 1st gear, which kinda sucks since I'm gonna have to drop the trans and replace 1st gear (Really didn't want to have to work on this car!). Makes sence since 1st gear still drives fine. Oh well, I'll keep you guys updated [&o].
i also had this noise. i knew it was the tranny but kept ignoring it ( it might go away). and yes it was a tooth missing in first. for 3 years or so i had this sound it kept getting louder (prob a few more went missing later on). i got a used tranny for $900 new stage 2 clutch for $400 install was $600. all is better than new now. except for all the other little probs
Dont let it go to long, By the sound it can be anything the synchros have
dog teeth that wear down thre made of copper, if you lucky you
can get them changed befor anything els brakes
it can be bearings on the main shaft with the 1st speed gear
whn its engaging to 2nd through Cluster 1st
So it could be something small to anything Big
Most of the time its coz we dont take it in befor more damage occurs
Have it looked at...

Didn't rad it all, but if it grinds going into gear, it may be messed synchros. If it grings once in gear, then it is likely the gear itself. You should be able to confirm by finding all sorts of metal shavings in the gear oil. You may want to change the gear oil in the mean time while you contemplate what to do.
its a loose bearing going into 2nd gear, the part is cheap, but maintenance is a rape, gotta take apart the Tranny for that, but its a good idea to do it when your getting you clutch changed. Do Labor together.
