Default 5th gear whine

I thought at first it might be a rear wheel bearing, but I don't think it's that at all. When I am in 5th gear and and am in full acceleration, there is a weird sound. I don't know how to explain it exactly, but its kind of like you can hear your tires rotating as your driving, the sound is kind of like: wa wah wah.

Also, when I am going 50mph or faster, when I put my foot off the gas, I can hear the exhaust a lot more now then I use to?

Anyone know what this could be?

No idea but why complain about hearing the exhaust more? I have the same sound but only during crusing at 50+ under full there is nothing but meat.

When did the sound start? Has it always been there?

Started a little while after I had my 18" rims put on (about a month ago). I went to the tire shop and he said it sounds like something to do with the transmission since it's only doing it in 5th gear.

interesting that it started when you changed the wheels ( are the tyres rotational and on the right way? ) tranny noise would come from the front rather than the rear, bearing noise gets louder the faster you drive and the exhaust could be a bad muffler so the noise would be more noticeable

do you think it could be an alignment issue then?

they are all-season tires and i hope they were put on the right way

very possible also did they need to fit spigot rings to center the wheels as without them the wheels would sort of wobble a bit

edit: also check if the wheels have the correct offset

I have no clue if they installed those rings or not, i just dropped off my car and picked it up. I'll call them and check.

if it is only doing it in 5th gear and not the others could it be an issue with the tranny?

check for any uneven wear on the tires and the muffler insulation is probably burning up a little causing it to become louder.
