Default 96 2.8 AT - Lost 5th gear

1996 a4 2.8l AT

Transmission started shifting late, like above 3.5k rpms. Then 5th gear cut out, though the car still shifts late. Any ideas?

You may want to get the tranny oil changed. That made a world of difference in my 97'.

That will bring back 5th gear or just return shifting to normal?

Transmission servicing isn't normally a diy affair. You might want to have it inspected by a qualified euro mechanic.

Jest your 97 was an AT? I thought you rolled 5 spd... or are you just hoping the same thing would apply... I'd say an auto that lost 5th gear, is in for a rebuild -- or a replacement (which is prolly cheaper)

uh, ouch on the rebuild. and taking it to a mechanic is asking for them to think im stupid and suggest a rebuild, even if it doesn't need one.

i'll see if my dad will have it inspected before i get it. this audi isnt supposed to suck money lol

thanks though guys.

My 97 was an Auto.

"this audi isnt supposed to suck money" - Every Audi sucks money. It's a fact of life.
