96 2.8 problems, help the noob
manual trans 2.8 v6 12v A4
1. so, first things first, after driving for a while (car at normal operating temp), from a stop the car doesnt want to go into first gear? could this be the synchros? could it be fixed with a flush and trans fluid change? i need to know what im looking for so i dont get gouged at the stealership...
2. slowing down from speed (75+) car gets a serious shimmy between 57-50 (braking)? would that be fixed with an alignment?

Allignment does not cause vibrations of that sort. What you are feeling is warped rotors. you can have them resurfaced and replace pads but for what you will pay for it i'd just replace the rotors. Usually if you feel the fibration in Steering wheel then its front rotors if its the brake pedal its the rears. but very fucked up rears can cause wheel vibes also. By the way feel free to blame yourself for this, number one reason rotors warp is ppl ride the brakes aka YOU . Can also happen if they are under minimum thickness.
nobody offers a trans fluid flush for M/T. changin fluid could improve it if its been a while. if you do that i strongly recomend RedLine gear oil ... best in my exp. A lot of times worn out clutch will cause dificult shifts. Also low fluid/dirty fluid. Other thing is clutch hydrolic fluid. If you have air in the system it will not fully disengage the clutch and ause very hard shifts especialy in 1st. 1st gear synchro wears out nearly last since there is a lot less rpm change ... sicne car is stoped and engien at idle.

yeah thats def warped rotors.. be prepared to have it be the syncros for your tranny as a worst case scenario.. I remember a guy came on here a few months back trying to sell his car saying it had warped rotors but was an easy fix.. all you have to do is hit the brakes really hard at about 75mph.. LMFAO!!! Dont try that.. just get them fixed..
