Hi --

I've got a 1996 A4 Quattro, 2.8 V6, and the check engine light has come on and I have no clue what the problem is. It's come on before, but then eventually goes off on its own. I brought it to the mechanic, but one time 2 codes will pop up, then they'll fix something, the light'll still be on, and there'll be more (and different codes). I ended up just leaving it alone because the car still runs fine, but I'm still curious as to why it's on at all.
The times when the light comes on are usually (if not always) when coasting down a large/long hill. When the light is on, my gas mileage usually decreases. A friend of mine suggested that perhaps it's the O2 sensor not working properly or the gas being too rich.
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
